Why this exists
Developer forums are broken. They are dominated by launch spam, engagement bait, corporate PR, and clout chasing.
Furthermore, developers are afraid to ask real technical questions or share catastrophic production mistakes because their real names and careers are attached. The actual reality of engineering is hidden behind a filter of success.
incognito is an anonymous, pure-text, high-signal forum for developers. We remove the names, remove the fear, and use strict formatting to keep the noise out.
The Four Tags
Every post must use exactly one. No untagged posts. The system will reject posts that lack context.
stuck
You need help with a real problem.
Rule: Must include what you are building, the exact error or symptom, what you already tried, and your stack.
decision
You are choosing between technical options.
Rule: Must include the options, what you picked, why, and the trade-off you accepted.
failure
A real post-mortem of an outage or bad code.
Rule: Must include what broke, how you found it, the root cause, and what you changed. Cost in time is welcome.
observation
A first-hand technical finding.
Rule: Must include something you measured, tested, or saw yourself. No "I heard that..." or second-hand advice.
Rules
Who can be here
- Working or learning developers only. Not marketers, recruiters, or growth people.
- One account, one pseudonym. No alt accounts.
- Your pseudonym is permanent. You cannot change it, and you cannot attach your real name to it.
Never allowed
- Company secrets, internal code, customer names, hostnames, API keys, or anything under NDA.
- Details that could identify you or your employer. Team size + stack + exact date = identifiable.
- Real names of coworkers, managers, or companies you are complaining about.
- Abuse, harassment, or pile-ons. Disagree with the code, not the person.
- Posts that exist only to promote your product, channel, or newsletter.
- AI-written posts presented as your own experience. If you used AI to help write, say so.
Show Day
- Monday only. Product launches, side projects, "look what I built."
- One Show Day post per person per week.
- Every other day: no links, no promotion. Not even in comments.
Anonymity and safety
- Posts are checked automatically before they go live. Secrets and identifying details are held back until you edit them.
- Report anything that breaks these rules. A human reads every report.
- We do not sell your data. Your email is never linked publicly to your pseudonym.
Consequences
- First time: post held, with a note on how to fix it.
- Repeated low-effort posts: posting slows down.
- Breaking a "never allowed" rule: post removed, warning.
- Leaking secrets, harassment, or alts: account removed, permanently.
What we are not
- Not a jobs board. Not a place to grow an audience. Not a place to be famous.
- There are no public scores here. Reputation exists, but it is hidden and only affects ranking.
Founding Members
- The first 50 real accounts get one plain word next to their pseudonym: founding.
- It is permanent. It means you joined first. No levels, no colors, no extra powers.
- It will never be sold.
